I made liberal use of the palette knife to apply the color which gave the waves some additional texture and a more dramatic effect in the clouds.<p></p>John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-45454080250188997482024-02-03T19:30:00.000-08:002024-02-03T19:31:32.268-08:00Theodor Herzl<p>Here is a drawing of Theodor Herzl I copied from the cover of his book titled "A Jewish State"</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0L8i_mTaUMY2qGGz0b_-qXNzWivMp1WgNtyVyJyzJB2_nBK7FrfxKZfAbQv64U-iEA3pX8RCjeWGZ9zq1TXyFj0YV6v33gBphGblD3Hi1jbJEmFNYj9U1TnS4E0D_p3EIDrlGHvLaFlZWo89B8zRJH__SNlo_HNZWh0Ci8cft-7PVFSTvVzcOYIlkv473/s3175/IMG_2358.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3175" data-original-width="2887" height="375" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0L8i_mTaUMY2qGGz0b_-qXNzWivMp1WgNtyVyJyzJB2_nBK7FrfxKZfAbQv64U-iEA3pX8RCjeWGZ9zq1TXyFj0YV6v33gBphGblD3Hi1jbJEmFNYj9U1TnS4E0D_p3EIDrlGHvLaFlZWo89B8zRJH__SNlo_HNZWh0Ci8cft-7PVFSTvVzcOYIlkv473/w341-h375/IMG_2358.jpg" width="341" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-35622326484307052822024-02-02T21:45:00.000-08:002024-02-02T21:46:54.639-08:00Pacifica beach<p>A quick watercolor sketch of one of the beautiful beaches in Pacifica. Here is an 8x10 seascape oil painting not far from our house. I limited my palette to essentially two colors using three paints - french ultramarine blue, burnt umber, and flake white. I focused on values to capture the light reflecting off the ocean and the mist blanketing the hills and cliffs.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIth06TK_NUqasWkiFkIgRw-S22mwIXSSmHD3s2kQMbxUhyphenhypheni6Yl59eg_kOM54MozMgaziaecJ_-kXrHDLeC7cWRYv3Lhcv30Ju0Kc7xKHywL1oijM3KvXCjdtj-weXxnXD1F5t6SHPUbJFH8Q7BhP9mXREw5eLDYAATtUjASRFN22714FBULMHm8rB3sOV/s4032/image_50448641.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="3024" data-original-width="4032" height="413" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhIth06TK_NUqasWkiFkIgRw-S22mwIXSSmHD3s2kQMbxUhyphenhypheni6Yl59eg_kOM54MozMgaziaecJ_-kXrHDLeC7cWRYv3Lhcv30Ju0Kc7xKHywL1oijM3KvXCjdtj-weXxnXD1F5t6SHPUbJFH8Q7BhP9mXREw5eLDYAATtUjASRFN22714FBULMHm8rB3sOV/w549-h413/image_50448641.JPG" width="549" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-84314820809108310012023-12-25T18:36:00.000-08:002024-01-17T19:29:40.870-08:00Ocean serenity <p> Today I was inspired to sketch a beach near our home that we frequently visit. One is a copy of a Cezanne (take a guess), the vase of flowers was a favorite composition I found of a contemporary artist online and made an attempt at rendering it in oil. The tea service with cherries is another favorite of mine based on a photo I found online.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWwkNdwv94/YSpOiYKM9-I/AAAAAAAAFCY/3JpKtuM8mkQ2D-CmEhIXFV7eFsCJ-ODKACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-6766.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="368" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-NEWwkNdwv94/YSpOiYKM9-I/AAAAAAAAFCY/3JpKtuM8mkQ2D-CmEhIXFV7eFsCJ-ODKACLcBGAsYHQ/w491-h368/IMG-6766.jpg" width="491" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-re801pFXJG0/YSpOiB3rA7I/AAAAAAAAFCU/S-OQUTD4mTcTmONd8Cgo9aAmm6cvFz9YACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-6767.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="543" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-re801pFXJG0/YSpOiB3rA7I/AAAAAAAAFCU/S-OQUTD4mTcTmONd8Cgo9aAmm6cvFz9YACLcBGAsYHQ/w407-h543/IMG-6767.jpg" width="407" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QZCDHF35JdY/YSpOicqSFuI/AAAAAAAAFCc/UfZysiHR9-89uf6XP-3i7JewFYXTre9cgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-6768.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="376" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-QZCDHF35JdY/YSpOicqSFuI/AAAAAAAAFCc/UfZysiHR9-89uf6XP-3i7JewFYXTre9cgCLcBGAsYHQ/w501-h376/IMG-6768.jpg" width="501" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-58294471573327618162021-08-27T23:52:00.001-07:002024-01-17T19:30:12.655-08:00Sunrise on Lake Cuomo<p> Last year I finally delivered on a promise to paint a harbor scene for my mom. It took me a couple of years to get inspired and with the pandemic I found some time to do this painting based on a photo I took at Lake Cuomo, Italy. I also included a few photos such as a color study to illustrate a bit about my processs.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pDV0-sdK4x0/YSnbwUT9P4I/AAAAAAAAFBE/uNy-tQdU8OAQJU6rIYKcpm-CLkmpKEvbACLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4843.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="340" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-pDV0-sdK4x0/YSnbwUT9P4I/AAAAAAAAFBE/uNy-tQdU8OAQJU6rIYKcpm-CLkmpKEvbACLcBGAsYHQ/w454-h340/IMG-4843.jpg" width="454" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVxxOze5p1c/YSncKY07fTI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/jrlc2U07IbM3gypA7EH2F_-RuiGdpLzdwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4590.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="325" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tVxxOze5p1c/YSncKY07fTI/AAAAAAAAFBQ/jrlc2U07IbM3gypA7EH2F_-RuiGdpLzdwCLcBGAsYHQ/w433-h325/IMG-4590.jpg" width="433" /></a></div><br /> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j-Emrnf73r4/YSncmTclTuI/AAAAAAAAFBo/ESIU_N8aWngq0o2ASHuOrDugUOkVV9GMQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4597.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j-Emrnf73r4/YSncmTclTuI/AAAAAAAAFBo/ESIU_N8aWngq0o2ASHuOrDugUOkVV9GMQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-4597.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-THOGT9MfGmA/YSncl8hMk8I/AAAAAAAAFBc/TVVoZdQJnGIEx9ZgYGmxfPTj_G_g6WbJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4596.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-THOGT9MfGmA/YSncl8hMk8I/AAAAAAAAFBc/TVVoZdQJnGIEx9ZgYGmxfPTj_G_g6WbJgCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-4596.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EWb5h0VW2Fg/YSnclyhpGJI/AAAAAAAAFBk/Fo3QqyWvl-4fNz3QZ4RffXryQkAEZ_WCQCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4593.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-EWb5h0VW2Fg/YSnclyhpGJI/AAAAAAAAFBk/Fo3QqyWvl-4fNz3QZ4RffXryQkAEZ_WCQCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-4593.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mMiy2h5yzyg/YSncl7yR46I/AAAAAAAAFBg/V84QJez8qoMlHju5vI95pAFiHtE3jWeEwCLcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG-4586.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-mMiy2h5yzyg/YSncl7yR46I/AAAAAAAAFBg/V84QJez8qoMlHju5vI95pAFiHtE3jWeEwCLcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG-4586.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /></div>John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-32717907930953357162021-08-26T23:06:00.004-07:002021-08-26T23:08:28.124-07:00Tulips from the garden<p>These tulips are from our garden. We were supposed to travel to Russia this May and as fate would have it those plans are out the window. As I look out the window from our home during the COVID-19 lockdown I did a couple of quick watercolor sketches from photos. Most of you will recognize the first sketch as Red Square in Moscow. Can you guess the location of the second sketch? I'll give you a clue...</div>

Rodin when sketching his models his eyes never left the model. He understood human anatomy and he wanted each and every line to flow from his eyes to his hands to the paper. Sargent when painting watercolors was most interested in how light played off of objects and forms.John Haddadhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/04355266581221748500noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6453415774027405917.post-30224173428534883362016-04-17T16:49:00.001-07:002016-04-17T16:49:38.554-07:00Portola Vineyards I spent a beautiful day Plein air painting with a group of artists that meet regularly. After a while I went into the museum where I enjoyed a display of Souix Native American drawings that told the story of the Battle at Little Bighorn (Custer's Last Stand). Then I stumbled onto a sculptor of a classic Greek male torso circa 50 B.C. and decided to sketch it. Here is my sketch.<br />
